Duration:                 The programme is offered as 5 theory modules of 5 days, together with 3 to 4 workplace assessments over a 6 – 10 month                                 period.

COURSE AIM: 
The purpose of this qualification is to enable people working within the primary and secondary packaging industry to produce a packaged food or beverage by operating, controlling and maintaining packaging machinery within a food manufacturing environment whist applying food safety, personal safety, quality assurance and monitoring critical control points.
Provide recognition and a portable qualification for persons working within the primary packaging process within a specific food or beverage context.

•  Outcomes:
            At the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
•  Communicate in a variety of ways in a food and beverage manufacturing environment.
•  Maintain quality assurance and monitor critical control points in a food and beverage packaging manufacturing environment.
•  Operate a context specific range of automated packaging equipment.
•  Solve problems and improve an automated packaging process. Monitor HACCP & occupational safety.
•  Demonstrate an understanding of microbiology in a food handling environment.
•  Demonstrate an understanding of basic machine operations in a manufacturing or packaging environment.
•  Perform first line maintenance.
•  Perform quality control practices.

The elective components of this qualification allows learners to gain specialist knowledge, skills and insight into the areas of filling bottles/cans,
   closing bottles/cans, labelling, packaging/unpacking. As a minimum this section should comprise of 43 credits.  However, more may be completed if
   operational needs require it.   
•  Operate the filling and closing process on an automated packaging line (elective - 24 credits)
•  Operate a labelling machine (elective - 10 credits)
•  Operate the packing/unpacking process (elective - 10 credits)
•  Operate a coding process (elective - 4 credits)

The following may be added if required.
•  Operate beverage blending and mixing plant and process
•  Operate pasteurising process (elective - 6 credits)
•  Operate the washing process (elective - 8 credits)
•  Apply personal safety principals (elective -5 credits)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
•  People who operate, control and maintain food or beverage packaging machinery in a primary or secondary packaging process within a food                manufacturing environment.
•  Persons requiring a qualification in the primary packaging process within a specific food or beverage context.
   Also suitable for learners wishing to articulate to other manufacturing environments such as fast-moving consumable products, the pharmaceutical,        and chemical industries.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates should be able to communicate and use numeric skills comfortably at NQF level 2, preferably with knowledge of the control of pests and waste materials as a part of a food safety system (US 120417), ability to apply personal safety practices in a food or sensitive consumer product environment (US 120416) and have the ability to apply good manufacturing practices as part of a food safety system (US 120403)

PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT FOR COMPETENCE:
Candidates are provided with practical and theoretical assignments which combine to form the portfolio of Evidence (PoE).  There are also workplace
assessments where learners are assessed whilst working on the machines in the plant where they work.  At the end of the programme there is a final summative workplace assessment to ensure integration of learning and understanding of all the unit standards/modules.
The facilitator/assessor conducts assessments, provides feedback, and where competent, the candidate is certificated by FoodBev SETA.
