| Responsibility: The Theme for eThekwini Municipality’s ABET 1 and WCN Groups |
|
Two great little 24 week interventions have been taking place on a once a week basis - Tuesday for Workplace Communication and Numeracy (WCN) group and Thursday for ABET 1 at eThekwini’s City Health Training Venue. The theme “Responsibility without Supervision” was introduced to encourage the learners who are also employees and citizens of this beautiful city and province to behave in a manner which shows responsibility to themselves, to their learning course work, responsibility at their work place, to their families and also to the rate payers who are the public whom they serve. This important characteristic could not have been introduced at a more suitable time than when the subject of The South African Constitution and the Bill of Rights and Responsibilities was being discussed in the media. The learners were amazed to discover and learn how much difference taking responsible actions, thoughts and behaviour can make in our society, a society plagued by intolerance, discrimination and xenophobia. The learners were excited at the prospect of doing something positive to make a difference in our city and communities and were encouraged to start small by sharing in class, in their work place, at home and everywhere they go. It is already evident in class that the seed of responsibility is bearing fruit amongst the learners when you see the high level of respect shown to each other, to their property as well as to their individual opinions and perceptions, and through the sharing of laughter and having fun in learning.
