Level 3 SKILLS PROGRAMME: ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) ABET 3 Credits: 37 Duration – 24 weeks COURSE AIM: The role of ABET is to assist individuals, both employed and unemployed, to learn to read and write, and use numeracy skills efficiently. ABET 3: - The aim of Adult Basic Education and Training 3 is to refine the communication and numeracy skills of candidates who have a reasonable level of reading, writing, speaking and numerical skills. Life skills and other interesting themes are used as a base around which the literacy and numeracy is woven. This gives the learners more than just the ability to read and write fairly fluently, but also decision making skills and essential knowledge on workplace and personal issues. Teamwork is also encouraged during each of these 24 sessions.
OUTCOMES: - At the end of the 24 sessions, learners can read and write essential information and use calculus to assist them in their personal and work lives.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? - This programme is designed for learners who are literate and who need to refine their skills further. Learners undergo a 1 day pre-assessment intervention in order to determine their levels of literacy prior to embarking on ABET and are placed in the appropriate learning groups.
PROGRAMME ROLLOUT and MODULARISATION:
- Programme begins with a one day Smarts Skills Assessments for new entrants. Learners who are already enrolled do not participate in these assessments. This programme is followed by attendance where by learners attend 24 sessions, one session per a week for a minimum of eight hours a day or one week per month. This programme has been spilt into 24 sessions for maximum effect and with our clients best interests in mind. Learners undergo a summative assessment in the middle of the programme. The ‘how am I doing’ assessments is an evaluating tool for facilitators and is a way of giving feedback to learners.
Modularization: - Lessons are structured into Modules which are further separated into manageable sessions.
Each level has 24 sessions which are group amongst 6 Modules. Modules are structured in a way that learners complete own work, which is part of their portfolios, while they are learning. This allows learners to start a new session and a new module once they have finished the previous one. The modules cover a range of aspects throughout the levels but which differs in a level of complexity as the learners’ knowledge increases.
PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT FOR COMPETENCE: - Candidates are provided with easy to complete “own work booklets” which combine to form the Portfolio of Evidence (PoE). They start the PoE during classes, and complete a few tasks on their own between each module. The facilitator assesses the learners' Own Work, provides feedback, and if there are gaps, the learners are assisted to complete them until the learner is competent. DIONYSUS awards competent learners with a certificate of competence which reflects credits of unit standard/s that a learner is competent on. There are no written exams.
